Ice Diving with Guitar in Antarctica - Tisziji Muñoz
Blackbird Carbon Fiber Guitar
I stumbled upon this video recently, it's funny because here you have this guy going ice diving in the Antarctic and brings a guitar down with him. So now we have him swimming around under the ice playing the guitar. There are some curious marine mammals that come by to have a look at what's going on. And by the looks of it, we now know that even starfish likes guitars.
The guitar used here is a acoustic Blackbird Carbon Fiber Guitar. It's a good choice because I don't think that a ordinary wooden guitar would survive this. The music played here is from Tisziji Muñoz on an electric guitar. And the song fits in pretty well with the whole underwater feel.
I'll add the description to the video below so you can read the whole story about how this all came about.
One of the things that I have always loved about the McMurdo dive locker is diving supervisor Rob Robbins' simply great taste in music, and the tunes that DJ Rob selects to play in the background while we are working in the locker. This year, with the newly completed expansion of the dive locker, and due to the surprising great acoustics in Rob's office lounge, Rob has been playing a lot more more live guitar in the locker than he used to. (few outside the dive locker's inner circle know of his guitarist talents) Just before my final dive of the season yesterday at Arrival Heights, Rob and I were listening to my good friend, the musical shaman Tisziji Muñoz, playing some really interstellar guitar on his song LOVE IS WHEN YOU LET IT BE, from his album DEATH IS A FRIEND OF MINE. ( You can check out Tisziji at his website: https://www.anamimusic.com/) Rob felt so inspired by Tisziji's magnificent playing that I was able to coax him into bringing my Blackbird carbon fiber guitar (https://blackbirdguitar.com/) along on the dive with us. I was finally able to shoot Rob performing in his favorite environment. Unfortunately the underwater microphone on my camera housing has not been working so well and it did not capture the detail and heartfelt intensity of Rob's playing, particularly in the terrific duet he played with a vocalizing Weddell Seal... So with Tisziji's permission, I have added the music of Tisziji's recording, the one that inspired us just before the dive, to the video. A last dive of the season in Antarctica just does not get any better than this!
