Kotaro Oshio - Brand New Wings

Hi folks,

Wanted to share a video with you today. This is Kotaro Oshio playing his new song Brand New Wings. You might not have heard about Kotaro Oshio before or any of his work. This would mainly be because Kotaro Oshio is Japanese, and we know that Japanese music isn't that popular here in the West. But he have been active now for about 11 years. He released his first album back in 1999. And now have 14 albums out. Kotaro Oshio is also known for his covers and movie soundtracks.

Kotaro Oshio have a very "unique" style of playing with his acoustic guitar. You can observe this in the beginning of this video. Kotaro Oshio's strumming style is referred to as a "nail attack" style. He slaps the strings with the nails of his middle and ring fingers. Kotaro Oshio also use Tap Harmonics and you can also hear that in this song.

 

This song Brand New Wings is on Kotaro Oshio's new album that he released this year Jan 12, 2011 (In Japan). The album is called Hand to Hand. And one thing that Kotaro Oshio also do is he gives us are very good Guitar Tabs. You can view them here in 4 parts: スコアNo.1 スコアNo.2 スコアNo.3 スコアNo.4. He have also released Tab Books for all his albums.

Kotaro Oshio is here seen playing on his Takamine Acoustic Guitars. I say guitars because there is a point in the song when Kotaro Oshio is seen playing together with himself. It's a recording / camera trick but he plays some very nice harmonics over the song. And I might add that if you have heard Japanese music before, you will hear similarities in the way the music is done. It's light and happy. Kinda hard to explain but have a listen and you will understand.
